Three phases
A substance is encountered in daily life in one of the three phases.
either it is: Solid, Liquid or Gaseous.

Points and ranges
If you have a mixture, it has substance properties of both materials. It no longer has a set boiling temperature (point) or melting temperature (point) but it now has a range of boiling and melting temperature. You can use this to see if a substance is a pure substance or mixture.
