Hoe maak je een vergelijking in het Engels?

Short Summary

• Korte woorden (1 lettergreep) krijgen -er of -est
• Vergelijking met 2 (.... dan) wordt '...-er than'
• bijv.: This chocolate is sweeter than that one.
• Vergelijking met alles (de ...) wordt 'the ...-est'
• bijv.: But Belgian chocolate is the sweetest.

En wat bij lange woorden?

Words with multiple syllables

Bij woorden met twee of meer lettergrepen:

-> more voor het bijvoeglijk naamwoord
bij een vergelijking tussen twee dingen:

expensive – more expensive

interesting – more interesting

A rose is more beautiful than a tulip.

Zulke vergelijkingen zijn herkenbaar aan than 

Let op: bij woorden met 2 lettergrepen die eindigen op -y;-le;-ow en -er wordt de vergrotende trap -er en de overtreffende trap-est,bijv. cleverer; narrowest.

Net zo..... als .... / hoe ... hoe...

Mocht je moeten zeggen dat twee dingen gelijk zijn, dan gebruik je in het Engels:

as....as

John is as smart as Jane.

A rose is as beautiful as a tulip.

Bij Hoe .... hoe... wordt de vertaling The .... the...

The sooner, the better

My house is (big)
...
than yours.

This flower is (Net zo mooi /beautiful)
... that one.

This is the (interesting) ....
book I have ever read.

Who is the (rich) ...
woman on earth?

A holiday by the sea is (net zo goed / good) ... a holiday in the mountains.

The weather this summer is even (bad)
... than last summer.

This street is ........ (narrow) than that one so you cannot drive through it with your car.
