Modals = hulpwerkwoorden
Can, could, should, to have to, to be able to, must

Always followed by an infinitive (= verb without to)

  • to make requests
  • ask for / give permission
  • to talk about possibilities
  • to talk about abilities
"Can you pass the salt?"
To be able to:
  • to talk about someone's possibilities
  • to talk about someone's abilities

Past tense of can
  • asking questions (polite/formal)
  • talk about possibility that something will happen in the future
"By the year 2200, our planet could look quite different"

General rule for negations, add not / n't
  • "We couldn't find you anywhere!"
  • "You cannot tell her yet."
  • "He isn't able to attend."
Exeption: modal verb to have                   to do + not/n't + have
  • "You don't have to come, if you don't want to."
