What period are we talking about when we're talking about hunter- gatherers?

Nomadic existence

last ice age --> lage parts of North America, Europe and Asia were covered with ice.

Temperature rose --> ice age receded --> Northern Europe became a pleasanter place to live ==> hunter gatherers arrived.

Most of their tools were made of stone ==> Early Stone Age/ Paleolithic age.

People lived in groups who traveled were food was ==> nomads --> they lived in tents/ huts or caves.

Men/ boys hunted, women and smaller children gathered.

What were the tasks of the women in the camps of hunter- gatherers?

Why did it became more attractive for hunter gatherers to live in Northern Europe?

The hunter gatheres were nomads, what does that mean?

1. They lived in big groups
2. They lived in villages
3. They didn' t live in the same place all the time

Middle Stone Age

10.000 BC: Average temprature rose slowly --> last ice age ended --> sea level rose  + Steppes and tundras disappeared and were replaced with forest.

There was a lot of wildlife such as: roe deer, red deer, bears and moose.

Hunter gatherers stayed in the same place for longer periods of time + groups grew.

In the near east people dit not move around any more because there was enough food all year round.

What was an effect of the fact that temperature rose even further during the Middle Stone Age?

1. there were more mammoths, so there was more food available
2. Animals died out, so people needed to travel more from camp to camp.
3. Groups were smaller, because of the melting of ice Europe flooded.
4. Groups grew + people stayed in one place for longer periods of time

Why didn't the people in the Near East travel around as much as before?
