Past continuous continued

When you have two actions in the past that interrupt each other, you have signal words.

I was walking home when I tripped over a dog.

While they were watching the game the phone rang.

When

The word when comes before the interrupting action in the sentence, so, before the Past Simple form.

While

While they were watching the game the phone rang.

The word while comes before the longer action, so, before the Past Continuous
