V5: Essay writing

What is the best way to learn how to write a good essay?

My ideas:

• Write a lot
• Read the feedback carefully
• Make a list of typical mistakes to avoid
• Think of one or two aspects to improve in your writing (for example: 'avoid repeating words/phrases', or 'use more linking words')

We will discuss 2 reasons for this.

too: when there is too much of something AND: also

There are too few people available for too many jobs.

I feel bad about not studying enough. -- Me too.

few / little / much / many

few / little:

- There were very few people at the party. (people = countable)

- After running the race, the athlete had little energy left. (energy = uncountable)

much / many:

- I didn't have much time / - Many students struggled with the deadline.

(much: uncountable nouns / many: countable nouns)

The difference between:

Firstly / First of all:

Firstly is used as the first argument/reason etc. in a list.

First of all is used when that's the first thing you want to discuss.

Look at your own text and feedback

1. Look at all the markings/corrections, and check if you understand why it's there.

2. Identify one or two things you are going to do differently next time.

3. Calculate your grade.
