How many types?

In general, what are the groups of modal verbs?

• Ability (bekwaamheid, mogelijkheid, toestemming)
• Advice (advies, zachte verplichting)
• Necessity (verplichting)

We gaan nu een filmpje over modal verbs kijken (~ 2:50).

Hij legt uit hoe je verschillende modal verbs gebruikt.

Je hoeft niet ALLES te begrijpen of onthouden.

Let op de volgende:

1. Veranderen de modal verbs met tijd en persoon?
2. Hoe maak je een vragende zin?
3. Hoe combineer je een modal verb + werkwoord?

How are modals different?

Veranderen de modal verbs met tijd en persoon?	Nee! "I can swim." and "He can swim." NOT "He cans swim."
Hoe maak je een vragende zin?	Wisselen van plaats "You can swim." -> "Can you swim?" NOT "Do you can swim?" ("have to" is een uitzondering
Hoe combineer je een modal verb + werkwoord?	Er is geen "to" tussen "You can swim." NOT "You can to swim." ("have to" is een uitzondering)

You might want to go to the doctor.

You should go to the doctor.

You must go to the doctor.

You can help yourself at home.
