'If' sentences

In het Nederlands heten ze 'voorwaardelijke bijzinnen'.

Je gebruik 'if' zinnen om voorwaarden aan te geven en hun (mogelijke) gevolgen:

If you press this button, the doorbell rings

If you leave now, you'll be in time

'If' sentences

You can use ''if'' sentences for three different things:

- For facts --> If you touch this, it will burn your finger.

- For something that you know is going to happen (almost) certainly --> He will give her a hug if she asks for it.

- For something that you know is (most likely) NOT going to happen (+would) --> She would go to work if she didn't feel so ill.

'If' sentences

Feiten: present simple if present simple

(Water boils if you heat it to 100 degrees)

(Bijna) zeker weten dat iets gaan gebeuren: will + hele werkwoord if present simple

(I will send him a card if you give me his address)

'If' sentences

(Bijna) zeker weten dat iets NIET gaat gebeuren: would + hele werkwoord if past simple

(John would go on holiday if he wasn't ill)

You should get a gym membership if you like working out.

If I want to get the sugar, I have to stand on my tippy-toes.
