> Explain the name 'Cold War'
  • The two powerful forces (USA & SU) and their allies were in conflict. The conflict consists of economic sanctions and threaten each other with militairy weapons. But it never came to a massive ground - or nuclear war, as we have seen in WW1 & WW2. 
    That's why the name 'cold' is used: the big confrontation never took place.

  • There were a lot of bloody revolts in several Eastern-European states (Hungary! Poland!).
  • Also there were actually two wars fought over the same ideologies: the Korean war ('50-'53) and the Vietnam war ('55-'75)

> How did the cold war come to and end? 
After 1985 (with the new Sovjet-president Gorbachev) the arms race relaxed and people were more free. 
in 1989 the Berlin wall fell, the GDR (eastern Germany) was dissolved in 1990. 
The Sovjetunion fell apart in 15 countries in 1991.
