H5 Period 3 - Presentation

Period 3

Presentation: Subject

You are going to talk about a great person from either the UK, the US, Canada, Australia or New-Zealand. This has to be somebody who has made a difference in people's lives, or has contributed significantly to (changing) society. 

We want you to dive into global history 

and study a famous person from 

the English speaking world.

Who can you talk about?

• Scientists  (e.g. Isaac Newton, Nikola Tesla, Ada Lovelace, Mary Anning)
• Novelists, playwrights and poets (e.g. Jane Austen, William Shakespeare, J.K. Rowling)
• Artists (painters & sculptors, not musicians or actors ) (e.g. J.M.W. Turner, Jackson Pollock, Banksy)
• Politicians (e.g. Winston Churchill, Abraham  Lincoln, Indira Gandhi (no Trump!)
• Kings and Queens (e.g. Elizabeth II, Henry VIII, Bloody Mary, Richard the Lionheart, Victoria)
• Freedom fighters and human rights activists (e.g. Rosa Parks, Emmeline Pankhurst, Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela)
• Explorers (e.g. James  Cook, Francis Drake, Edmund Hillary, Lewis & Clark)
• Architects and civil engineers (e.g. Christopher Wren, Isambard Kingdom Brunel)

Your choice

• Every person can only be chosen once in each class.
• Put the name of your person in the general chat in the team of your class on Teams so everybody can see who has already been chosen.
• You need the permission from your teacher to give a presentation about the person you of your choice!

Presentation

Five minutes

• You must speak for five minutes. You are not allowed to read out a presentation you wrote. The presentation has to be learnt by heart. 
• You are allowed to have a piece of paper with ten words (no sentences!) on it to help you with difficult words.
• You show this sheet of paper to your teacher before your presentation. If you speak for less than five minutes points will be deducted from your mark.

PowerPoint presentation

You are allowed to use a PowerPoint presentation. You must fill the slides with pictures. You can only use words - not sentences - in your PowerPoint presentation.

Presentation skills

You also get points for your presentation skills: posture, audibility, enthusiasm etc. Have look at the videos below to get an idea of what a good presentation should look like.  On YouTube you can find dozens of videos with tips. 

Tell a story

A good presentation is like a story. You do not say things like "life" and then you tell your audience about the person's life, or say "biggest achievement"and then discuss the person's achievement. This is really horrible! 

Contents

1. Tell your audience about the life of the person you have chosen.
2. Tell your audience about the contributions, achievements etc. for which this person is still known today.
3. Tell your audience how this person has helped shape life as we know it today.

Alone or in a group?

You do the presentation on your own.

Your audience will consist of the people who have to give a presentation that lesson ánd the people who have to give a presentation the next lesson. This is so they can see what is expected of them.

English

1. Both simple and complex grammatical structures used correctly
2. Varied vocabulary,  both simple and difficult words used correctly
3. Fluency (avoid long pauses, ehm, talk naturally)
4. Pronunciation (American or British, but not Dutch-accented)
