Past simple = Something happened and finished in the past

I played the piano yesterday

Past continuous = A situation that was going on for a longer while in the past (aan het)

It was raining all night

You can also use #1 and #2 in one sentence. The short one interrupts the long one.

I scored a goal when I was playing football.

Present perfect = something that started in the past and is still going on in the present!
