  • Do assignment 2 -> lesson 9/10

Slide 2 - Diapositive

The passive
  • As you have learnt from the grammar reader, the passive is a good form to use in your writing.
  • It is also a requirement to use the passive during your fake news project. That is why we wil be paying a little more attention to the passive.
  • For example, it’s better to say:
  • ” Weapons have been sold by the army”
  • than “the army has sold weapons”.

Lijdende vorm

  • Het onderwerp van de zin ondergaat iets.
  • Het onderwerp voert de actie niet uit.

 Passive

  • Bij de passive is het niet belangrijk wie of wat iets doet, maar de actie is wel belangrijk. Dus wat er wordt gedaan of gebeurt is .
  • Someone broke our kitchen window. > active
  • Our kitchen window was broken (by someone) . > passive

Slide 6 - Diapositive

  • vorm van 'to be' + voltooid deelwoord

  • The song was played three times (by the dj).
  • The wall has been painted green (by my dad).

Slide 7 - Diapositive

Active vs Passive
  • Active: I play tennis every Monday evening.
  • Passive: Tennis is played every Monday evening (by me).

  • Active: He has built this bicycle from scratch.
  • Passive: This bicycle has been built from scratch.

  • Active: Valentijn repaired my car last week.
  • Passive: My car was repaired last week (by Valentijn).

Slide 8 - Diapositive

From active to passive...
Om een actieve zin passief te maken, moet het lijdend voorwerp vooraan in de zin komen te staan, als onderwerp van de passieve zin.
The cat chases the mouse.

'The mouse' wordt onderwerp van de passieve zin --> komt vooraan te staan
'chases' is een present simple --> present simple van "to be" --> is
gevolgd door het voltooid deelwoord van 'chase' --> chased
The mouse is chased by the cat.
