Elizabethan theatre (1562-1642)

  • Elizabeth I, Queen of England (1558-1603)
  • The first English theatres were built
  • Lord Chamberlain's men: company of actors for  
     which Shakespeare wrote. 
  • Richard Burbage: main actor, played all the leading  roles.
  • Going to theatre was very popular
  • The Globe theatre.

The Globe

  • Build in 1598
  • Outside of London        
    no control of the Puritan
    city officials (who were hostile 
    to theatres)
  • All the plays of Shakespeare were performed here
  • Burned down at 1613, during the play Henry IVV
     (a canon was fired and set fire to the roof)
  • Could take up to 3000 people
  • All sorts of people visited

Eigenlijk geen vrouwen op toneel, maar de acteur die Juliet speelde kreeg baard in keel, daarom mocht 'viola' invallen. Romeo wordt gespeeld door Shakespeare die verliefd is geworden op Viola.
