What do we know about plant life cycles?

Where do seeds come from?

 The first stage of the plant life cycle

begins with the fertilisation of a seed which causes an embryo to form. This will become the new plant

The embryo is made up of a young root which will form the root system, and a young shoot which forms the rest of the plant

Around the seed there is a protective coating called the shell or seed coat. Inside the seed there is a food store which will support growth until the plant is able to photosynthesise and produce its own food. These are called cotyledon

 These are important because in plants such as beans, radishes and mustard they are the main food source. They also are the first leaves to appear above ground when the seed has germinated.
