What is terrorism? 

- A terrorist is a person who tries to convince people in his ideology by using force. 

- Because these persons mostly

 failed by using words, they use 

violence. 

America under Attack

11 september 2001

On September 11, 2001, the largest attack on America since Pearl Harbor (1941) is carried out.

After the attack, it quickly becomes clear that the Islamic terrorist movement Al Qaida is behind the attack.

One Superpower 

from 1991

Since the end of the Soviet Union, the world at the end of the 20th century has only one superpower left: the United States.

The influence of the U.S. in the world is growing: politically and culturally.

However, there is also much criticism of this growing influence.

Op Ground Zero, de plek waar ooit de Twin Towers stonden, is nu het National September 11 Memorial & Museum.

The leader of al-Qaeda, Osama Bin Laden believes that the United States was rightfully punished.

He believed that most of the citizens of the United States do not live by the rules of Islam.

He also believed that the United States supports too much Israel in their fight against the Islamic Palestinians.

War on Terror

2001 - present

U.S. President George W. Bush swears revenge and starts the "War on Terror.

He also appeals to his NATO allies.

Tough wars are being fought in Iraq and Afghanistan against (Muslim) terrorists....

Explain what the previous cartoon expressed.

....but now, more than 20 years later, there is still much unrest and instability in those countries.

This is causing new violence and attacks....

But is a terrorist in our eyes, also a terrorist in someone else's eyes?

Nelson Mandela was listed as a terrorist in the U.S. until 2008....

In his political early years, he was still part of a group that committed violence against Apartheid 

Apartheid meant that people of non-white skin color were not allowed to enter certain areas.

People then got a different picture of Mandela

The image of Mandela changed

De Klerk released Mandela in 1990; he felt Mandela was unjustly imprisoned.

In the eyes of many people, Mandela was seen as a terrorist....

But others also saw him as a freedom fighter.
