The zero conditional


If + present simple , present simple

If you add blue to red paint, you get purple paint.


Every time you do A, B happens. It is often used for (scientific) facts.


(negative: add don't/doesn't)

The first conditional

If + present simple, will + infinitive


If the weather is nice, I will go to the park.


In the if-clause a condition is stated which has to be met for the second half of the sentence to come true.


(negative: don't/doesn't & won't)

If + past simple, would + infinitive


If I was rich, I would travel the world.


Something which is not true at present. There is a very slight chance that it might ever become true.


(negative: not + verb/didn't & wouldn't)

If + past perfect, would have + past participle


If I had studied harder, I would have passed my
exam.

Something which was not true in the past. There is no chance that it will ever become true (because it is in the past and you cannot change the past)

We also have mixed conditionals,
just to make it a bit more annoying. 

  • We combine the if-clause of 3 with the
    main clause of 2.
  • We combine the if-clause of 2 with the
    main clause of 3.

Let's repeat: Mixed conditionals

Combine 3 & 2:

If + past perfect, would + infinitive

If you had read the manual, you would know what to do with that bolt.


Combine 2 & 3:

If + past simple, would have + past participle
If your had good eyesight, you would have seen the car coming towards you.

Mixed conditionals
3 & 2:

Third conditional + second conditional: if + past perfect … would(n’t) / might(n’t)/could(n’t) /
should(n’t) / + infinitive

Example: If Sally hadn’t tuned her violin, it wouldn’t sound very nice

The if-clause can state the “cause” or “reason” and refers to the past (3rd cond.), with the
“result” in the main clause referring to the present (2nd cond.). 
A change in the past situation (Sally tuned her violin) would cause a different present situation (it sounds nice)

2 & 3:

Second conditional + third conditional: if + past simple … would(n’t)/ might(n’t)/could (n’t)/should(n’t) have + past participle

Example: If I weren’t lazy, I could have gotten higher marks.

The if-clause refers to the present (2nd cond.), the main clause can refer to the past (3d cond.)
If the present situation changes (not lazy) the past situation would have been different (higher marks).
