Adverbs & Adjectives
The difference between adverb (bijwoord) and adjective (bijvoeglijk naamwoord):
  • This is a beautiful house. -adjective (says something about noun)
  • He plays beautifully. -adverb (says something about verb)

Be ware of the exceptions: 
  • He is a good student. - adjective
  • He plays well. - adverb

Remember the passive voice?
When we don't know the subject of a sentence or when the subject is very general/irrelevant, we use the "passive voice": 
  • Example: The president has just been shot. (we don't know by whom)
  • Example: Someone buys flowers every day- Flowers are bought every day. (someone is irrelevant)

Yet, just, ever, never, since: Present Perfect (situatie tot nu toe)
  • Example: I have never been to China before. 
Yesterday, 1984, last week: Past simple (gewone verleden tijd)
  • Example: Yesterday I went to Breda. 
Usually, always, normally, every day: Present simple (gewone tegenwoordige tijd)
  • Example: I usually brush my teeth every day.
For years, for hours, for a long time: Present perfect continuous. (op dit moment)
  • Example: She has been painting this room for hours and hours.
before, after, when: Past Perfect (ene actie voor de andere)
  • Example: AfterJohnny had left the class room Lottie came in.
