Comparisons

You can compare things by saying:

• More … than: It is more expensive than the agent told me.
  
• Less … than: We have less work to do than we thought
  
• As … as: You are as funny as your brother.
  
• Not as … as: I don’t feel as good as I felt yesterday
  

Translate: Jack is langer dan Miep

1. Jack is longer than Miep
2. Jack is taller then Miep

Translate: Hij is net zo slecht als ik in Russisch

Adverbs & Adjectives

The difference between adverb (bijwoord) and adjective (bijvoeglijk naamwoord):

• This is a beautiful house. -adjective (says something about noun)
• He plays beautifully. -adverb (says something about verb)

Be ware of the exceptions: 

• He is a good student. - adjective
• He plays well. - adverb

Which is correct?

1. Manchester United played really badly yesterday
2. Manchester United played really bad yesterday

Remember the passive voice?

When we don't know the subject of a sentence or when the subject is very general/irrelevant, we use the "passive voice": 

• Example: The president has just been shot. (we don't know by whom)
  
• Example: Someone buys flowers every day- Flowers are bought every day. (someone is irrelevant)

Turn this sentence into passive voice:
Someone will thank the boss

Turn into passive voice:
Someone is drinking juice

1. Juice is being drunk (by someone)
2. Juice has been drunk (by someone)
3. Juice was drunk (by someone)
4. Juice is drunk (by someone)

Remember: tenses? 

Let op signaalwoorden: 

Yet, just, ever, never, since: Present Perfect (situatie tot nu toe)

• Example: I have never been to China before. 

Yesterday, 1984, last week: Past simple (gewone verleden tijd)

• Example: Yesterday I went to Breda. 

Usually, always, normally, every day: Present simple (gewone tegenwoordige tijd)

• Example: I usually brush my teeth every day.

For years, for hours, for a long time: Present perfect continuous. (op dit moment)

• Example: She has been painting this room for hours and hours.

before, after, when: Past Perfect (ene actie voor de andere)

• Example: AfterJohnny had left the class room Lottie came in.
