They used to eat crisps for breakfast but they now try to eat healthy. 

Gebruik:
Bij een regelmatige gebeurtenis (gewoonte) --> maar nu niet meer
Als iets vroeger zo was --> maar nu niet meer zo is

In het Nederlands – vroeger (altijd)
We used to swim there. - Vroeger zwommen wij daar (altijd).

- na een bijvoeglijk naamwoord
- na which 
- na this, that, these en those

Past Perfect = voltooid verleden tijd
Had + voltooid deelwoord           
ww+ed (regelmatige werkwoorden)            3e vorm (onregelmatige werkwoorden)


Je gebruikt de past perfect (had + voltooid deelwoord) wanneer je meerdere momenten in het verleden bespreekt. 
De past perfect gebruik je dan voor dat wat het langst geleden is en de past simple voor dat wat minder lang geleden heeft plaatsgevonden. 


I had defeated my friend Jimmy (het langst geleden = past perfect),
before his parent arrived (minder lang geleden = past simple).

I planned to go on holiday, when I had heard about the cheap ticket prices.
As soon as we had finished our drinks, we went to school.
You were surprised, because you had never seen anything like this.


Signaalwoorden die je bijvoorbeeld kunt tegenkomen voor de past perfect zijn: after, before, because, right after, as soon as, when, in 2012.
