Noun

Pronoun

A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun.

Define a pronoun and give examples of different types of pronouns. Ask students to identify pronouns in a sentence.

A verb is a word that expresses an action or state of being.

Adjective

An adjective is a word that describes a noun or pronoun.

Adverb

An adverb is a word that describes a verb, adjective, or other adverb.

The fished jumped quickly from the water.

The man sat alone.

Preposition

A preposition is a word that shows position or, direction. Some examples are in, out, under, over, after, out, into, up, down, for, and between.

She worked at her desk.

The sun was in the sky.

Define a preposition and provide examples. Ask students to identify prepositions in a sentence and come up with their own examples.

Conjunction

A conjunction is a word that connects words, phrases, or clauses. Some examples conjunctions are: and, but, or, nor, although, yet, so, either, and also.

We ate pizza and drank pop for dinner.

Erin loves to swim and play at the beach.

Define a conjunction and provide examples. Ask students to identify conjunctions in a sentence and come up with their own examples.

Interjection

An interjection is a word or phrase that expresses strong feeling or emotion. Such examples are Wow!, Ouch!, Hurray!, and Oh no!

Identifying Parts of Speech

Now that you know the eight parts of speech, let's practice identifying them in sentences.

Provide sentences for students to identify the parts of speech. Encourage students to work in pairs or groups.
