Introduction

Antisemitism means hatred of Jews. In this teaching material, we use interactive video to explore the history and topicality of antisemitism. Interactive questions teach learners what antisemitism is, what the Holocaust means, and why Hitler hated Jews. It also includes two videos of young people discussing their experiences of antisemitism. They try to answer the question: ‘Is criticizing Israel antisemitic?’

Slide 1 - Diapositive

This slide introduces the topic.

As a warm-up exercise, you could analyze the illustration with the learners. What can they see? What do the images (symbols) have to do with antisemitism?

Summing up afterwards, you could highlight keywords such as swastika, Jews, destruction, hatred, etc.

Discuss the responses. Pause to consider how the antisemitic ideology of Hitler and his followers, based on prejudices and stereotypes, led to the exclusion, discrimination against, persecution and murder of 6 million Jews, as well as Roma and Sinti, disabled people, homosexuals and many others.

The correct answer is C. The systematic murder of Europe’s Jews under Adolf Hitler’s Nazi regime. An estimated 6 million Jews were murdered – many of them in a concentration or death camp, such as Auschwitz or Sobibor.
