Lesson 3 technical theatre

Last week we continued the technical theatre period. What was the assignment at the end of that lesson?

Remember, technical theatre.

Sets the tone for a performance 

Tells the audience where they are, what time it is and what kind of day it is.

Technical theatre is what makes a carpet fly and a pumpkin turn into a beautiful carriage.

Gives technicians a chance to create the fantastic and the magical.

Research assignment

Find a painting/picture from the theme you have chosen (natural disaster) last week 

There must be people in your painting/picture

Decide what lighting you will use to recreate the atmosphere
Make sure there's a storyline with clear beginning/climax/end

Performance

1. Use the painting/picture as a starting point of your perfomance
2. Choose a technician in your group that will work the lights/sounds during the performance.
3. Think about the lights and sounds you're going to use to set the mood 
4. Try to have a simple storyline in it as well today!

Exercise: natural phenomena islands

- There are sheets spread out across the open space.

- Each sheet represents an Island where a specific natural phenomena (often a disaster...) can be found. For instance: Tsunami Island. 

- Between the Islands is the sea, so if you're not on an Island you have to be swimming...
-We start this exercise with swimming in the sea!

Sit down and wait for the next instruction.

When you arrive...

In 60 seconds... write down as many words that you can associate with the Island you're on.	In 3 minutes... write down what you already know about the natural phenomena on this Island?
In 2 minutes... write down 10 adjectives for this natural phenomena	In 5 minutes... Any ideas on how to portray the natural phenomena of your Island on stage. Lights: what do we see? Sounds: what do we hear? Acting: what are YOU doing?

• Create a short performance in your 'Island group' about your natural phenomena. 
• You can't use spoken word.
• Use light & sound to create an atmosphere. 
• Rehearsal time: 15 minutes
• Use the Island-sheet you just filled in as your inspiration!

Natural disaster wheel 

Find a picture of your natural disaster. Make sure there are people in this picture!

Assignment 

Groups 4 + 1 technician

Create a performance with the natural disaster the wheel gave you.

Start with a tableau (picture)
Make sure you have a clear beginning-climax-end

Create an atmosphere with light & sound (technician).
