Chapter 5 (kerboodle)
Breathing and respiration
Lesson 1: Respiration and Testing (p.62-66)

Slide 1 - Diapositive

Why can't we hold our breath for long?
Video: https://www.schooltv.nl/video/proefkonijnen-in-de-klas-hoelang-kun-je-je-adem-inhouden-onder-water/

Slide 2 - Diapositive

Some questions:
  • Why is breathing so important?
  • What is the function of the lungs?
  • What is the function of the blood?
  • Why is it more difficult to hold your breath when you are moving?

Slide 3 - Diapositive

What is the formula of respiration?
->
Glucose
Oxygen
Energy
Carbon dioxide
Water

Slide 4 - Question de remorquage

Respiration
Getting energy from food
  • Our fuel is glucose
  • Oxygen is needed to break down glucose (breathing)

Because oxygen is needed we call it:
Aerobic respiration

Slide 5 - Diapositive

Using energy
-Muscles
-Transporting chemicals
-Absorbing food
-Sending messages along nerves
-Building cells for growth
-Keeping a constant body temperature

Slide 6 - Diapositive

Where is the energy produced?
I’m a real “powerhouse”
That’s plain to see

I break down food

And release energy

Slide 7 - Diapositive

Where is the energy produced?
I’m a real “powerhouse”
That’s plain to see

I break down food

And release energy

Mitochondria

Respriration takes place in all cells all the time!

Slide 8 - Diapositive

Carbon dioxide
  • Waste gas made in respiration
  • becomes toxic if it builds up in cells
  • we need to get rid of it
  • More excersize-> faster and deeper we breathe to remove it

Slide 9 - Diapositive

Testing for carbon dioxide
  • Lime water goes cloudy when CO2 is added

Slide 10 - Diapositive

More carbon dioxide out?

Slide 11 - Diapositive

Rate of respiration
How fast respiration takes place
-Rate at which oxygen is used up
OR
-Rate at which carbon dioxide is produced

You need to use a Respirometer

Slide 12 - Diapositive

Respirometer
  • Soda lime takes up CO2
  • Removal of oxygen reduces the volume and pressure
  • Coloured water moves towards the organisms

*The distance moved by the fluid is therefore affected only by the oxygen taken up and not by the carbon dioxide given out.
