Structure (similar to essay)
Start with a fact/question/statistic/quote/story (grab attention!)

Intro your topic, and make sure that the link between your topic and the given theme A Story that moved me is very clear. Provide a “thesis statement”
Split & deliver the middle part of your speech in [3] clearly identifiable blocks; inspire/convince/persuade your audience to either take action, or change their opinion/attitude about something. Keep in mind you should entertain the audience to keep them interested & listening to you!
Link back to your opening fact/question/statistic/quote...
Finish with a call for action - a phrase/statement/quote to inspire/convince/persuade the audience to do something

Tips!
  • KISS: to hold your audience’s attention, Keep It Short and Simple: short sentences, simple grammar
  • Rule of 3: The human brain responds magically to things that come in threes. Firstly, Secondly, Thirdly
  • Pronouns: Use “we” to create a sense of unity, “them” for a common enemy, “you” if you’re reaching out to your audience, and “I” / “me” if you want to take control.
  • Poetry: Repetition, rhyme and alliteration make a speech much more memorable. Remember to also include pauses. This will vary the flow of sound, helping you to hold your audience’s attention.
  • Jokes: Humour is powerful. Use it to perk up a sleepy audience, as well as a rhetorical tool. Laughter is based on people having common, shared assumptions – and can therefore be used to persuade.
