What is a present perfect?

When remembering what a present perfect is, what do you think a past perfect is?

The past in the past

The past perfect is all about what happened in the past.

Usually there's two actions that both took place in the past. The action that happened first will be in the past perfect and the second will be in past simple. This tense is all about showing what happened first and what happened after

He left the house after he had done the dishes.

We biked to school after we had missed the bus.

Form

You make the past perfect by saying "had + past participle". 

1. After Yara had finished her work, she went to lunch.

(First she finished her work and then she went to eat lunch.)

2. I washed the floor when the painter had gone.

(First the painter left and then I washed the floor.)

3. Harold had known about it for a while.

(First he knew about it, then others knew about it)

Questions and negatives

To make a question in the past perfect, you turn around the verb had and the pronouns: 

Had he done the dishes before he left the house?

Had they missed the bus before they biked to school?

To make a sentence negative you add "not" to had. 

He hadn't done the dishes before he left the house.

We hadn't missed the bus before we biked to school.

A note

He had had a few beers before he left the house.

They threw up after they had had the party.

Before they went to Paris, they ......... (train) hard.

Her coach got mad because she ...... (miss) her training.

When she ....... (arrive) in Paris, she checked into the hotel at once.

When Shireen joined the team, she ....... (already / play) in another team.

After she ........ (sign) a contract, she started her training again.
