1) Jessica has sold her mother's ring for a monkey. Portia will marry Bassanio by the end of act 3 scene 2 and gives Bassanio a ring. Rings symbolize loyalty, love or power. 
2) She wants to give money Bassanio to pay off Antonio's debt.

3) Shylock insists on having his bond. Jessica mentions "I have heard him swear to Tubal and to Chus, his countrymen,  that he would rather have Antonio's flesh than twenty times the value of the stum that he did owe him."
4) Destiny? Portia tells Bassanio to "pause a day or two
before you hazard." The inscripture on the lead casket says "who chooseth me must give an hazard all he hath" (p. 38)

This is an important quote because it draws a line between the genres of science fiction and dystopia. How are we as humans to use our intelligence to control each other through science.

Before the speech 
  •  What news on the Rialto = trading centre in Venice, it's where merchants used to meet. 
  • Salerio and Salanio talk about the fact that Antonio lost some of his ships. How is this a problem?
  • How do Salerio and Salanio react to Shylock suddenly entering? 
  • Shylock confronts Salerio and Salanio with Jessica having eloped with Lorenzo mentioning the bond. Focus especially on the words "flesh" and "blood." What is the meaning?
