The History of Valentine's Day :

Two legends.

1. The first legend:

Valentine's Day comes from the feast " Lupercalia". 

Lupercalia was a feast to honour the Roman god of fertility and was celebrated between 13 and 15 February.

2. The second legend

Valentine's Day was named after Saint Valentine, a priest. 

Emperor Claudius II had banned marriage because he thought married men were bad soldiers. 

Valentine broke the rules and arranged marriages in secret.

When Claudius found out, Valentine was thrown in jail and was executed on February 14th.

Cupid

The first commercial valentines in the United States were printed in the mid-1800s. Valentines commonly depict Cupid, the Roman god of love, along with hearts, traditionally the seat of emotion. Because it was thought that the avian mating season begins in mid-February, birds also became a symbol of the day.
