- Decide where in the text you can find the answer: scan the text.

Scanning

Orienting

You always start with this

• Your goal at the start is to get a first impression
• Lay-out: chat, newspaper article, menu? etc.
• First impression: title, sub-headings, pictures
• Expectations: what's it about? What do you already know about this topic?

Skimming (reading globally)

• Read the first and last sentence of every paragraph
• Just try to find out what the text is about, skip the details
• Don't worry about difficult or unknown words
• Look at paragraphs in bold
• Use skimming for questions about the whole text. Look for clues to support the right answer.

Scanning 

• Looking for certain information
• For example in which year something happened or the price of something
• You don't have to read the rest of the text if you find the answer.

Reading intently

Reading the text attentively line by line, looking for the answer to the question

Tekstdoelen

Ask yourself: Waarom schrijven ze dit eigenlijk?

Je spreekt van amuseren als een tekst de lezers wil vermaken.

Als een tekst de lezers iets wil vertellen, spreek je van een informatieve tekst of van informeren.

Een tekst heeft als doel overtuigen als de schrijver wil dat de lezer de mening van de schrijver overneemt.

Als het doel activeren is, probeert de schrijver de lezers wel of niet iets te laten doen.

Tekstdoelen

Ask yourself: Waarom schrijven ze dit eigenlijk?

- Informeren zoals bij nieuwsbericht, geboortekaartje

- Amuseren  zoals bij roman, strip, raadsel,

mop, column

-Activeren (overhalen) zoals bij reclamefolder, advertentie

uitnodiging, affiche

- Overtuigen zoals bij ingezonden brief, sommige columns

Kinds of questions:

- Multiple choice question (A, B, C or D)

- Open question (schrijf de zin op)

- Gap question (open plek in de tekst)

- Statement question (true/false, juist/onjuist)

- Quote the text ("Citeer de eerste twee woorden")

Meerkeuzevragen

1. Kijk naar de titel, inleiding, naam van de schrijver etc.
   
2. Wat weet je al van het onderwerp?
3. Bekijk de vragen die bij de tekst horen.
4. Skim and scan de tekst.
5. Probeer lastige woorden te begrijpen via de context.
6. Lees de vraag en de bijbehorende alinea.

Meerkeuzevragen

1. Let op de eerste en laatste zin van de alinea. ( vaak de hoofdgedachte). 
   
2. Let op signaalwoorden, zoals but, however, and etc. 
   
3. Wat is je eigen antwoord? 
   
4. Kies het antwoord wat het dichtste bij je eigen antwoord ligt. 
   
5. Onderstreep het gedeelte dat overeenkomt met jouw gekozen antwoord. 
   
6. Komt  het onderstreepte tekstgedeelte overeen met je antwoord? 
   

    7. Als je het antwoord niet weet. Streep foute antwoorden weg.

1. Read the question. Not the answers! Any useful information? 

2. In the example you can see that you have to look at paragraph 1. Read paragraph 1, nothing more! Mark signal words.

3. Try to answer the question for yourself,

4, Now read the answers. 

5. Which ones are nonsense?  Cross them out.

6. Choose your answer.

How does the writer introduce the phenomenon ''Slow TV'' in paragraph 1? By describing what it is and...

1. explaining why so many people like it.
2. Giving examples that prove its popularity.
3. Persuading readers to also watch it
4. Stressing that it is an innovative programme.

Explanation

1. Signal words: The first instance, its sequel,since then, and. 

2. A vraagt om een explanation (reden / oorzaak ) maar er staat nergens because, as, for etc. A valt dus af.

3. C gaat over persuading (overtuigen). Er staat nergens een overtuiging. C valt af.

4. D gaat over een innovative programme. Ook dat is niet te vinden in de tekst. D valt af.

Zo streep je antwoorden dus weg!

3. Answer C involves fashion hotspots. Fashion hotspots aren't mentioned.

4. Answer D mentions snapshots. Snapshots aren't mentioned. 

Adviezen

1. Brede belangstelling helpt - lees de krant, volg het nieuws. Kijk bijvoorbeeld elke dag Newsround. 
2. Lees Engelse boeken, artikelen.
3. Brede woordenschat maakt teksten lezen gemakkelijker. Bestudeer woordenlijsten. GOOGLE! Ook woordenlijsten van signaalwoorden!

Signaal woorden uit je hoofd leren en hun betekenis en doel = beter tekstbegrip.
