• Elya Yelnats: No-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather
• Stanley Yelnats I: great-grandfather. The son of Elya Yelnats. robbed by Kate Barlow.
  
• Stanley Yelnats II: grandfather.
  
• Stanley Yelnats III: father = inventor
  
• Stanley Yelnats IV: main character. Punished for stealing shoes.

• Chapter 24: Mr Sir's face looks bad. He doesn't give Stanley any water. 
• Chapter 25: Sam, the onion man (onions = very healthy) + donkey Mary Lou + does chores school for Katherine Barlow + in love = scandalous
• Chapter 26: school is ruined, they want to hang Sam, Sam and Kate flee in his boat, trout Walker kills Sam. Since then: no rain! Kate shot the sherrif then gave him a kiss. Kate became an outlaw. 

• Chapter 27: The boys don't like it that Zero helps Stanley digging. In return Stanley teaches Zero to read. Zero's real name is Hector Zeroni. 

• Chapter 28: After 20 years Kate returns to Green Lake. Trout and Linda Walker want the money she has robbed (loot = buit). Kate is killed by a yellow-spotted lizard. Final words: start digging... 

• Chapter 29: It's very hot. Stanley sees a mountain peak that looks like a thumb, reminding him of what his great-grandfather had said (I found refuge on God's thumb)

Chapter 30: 

• Stanley has been at camp green lake for 46 days. 
• The boys are still annoyed about Zero digging Stanley's hole.
• Zigzag attacks Stanley. 
• Zero helps Stanley almost chokes Zigzag. 
• They are taken to the Warden and she hears about Zero digging Stanley's holes. 
• Mr. Pendanski humiliates Zero. 
• Zero hits Mr. Pendanski with a shovel and runs away. 

Chapter 31: 

• Stanley needs to dig two holes. 
• He is angry he let Zero dig his before.
• Stanley is worried about Zero and hopes he has found refuge on God's thumb. 
• Zero = ward of the state (an individual who has been placed under the care of the government, usually because their parents or guardians are unable to do so). 
• They are destroying Zero's documents. 

Chapter 32: 

• Stanley needs to dig two holes. 
• He is angry he let Zero dig his before.
• Stanley is worried about Zero and hopes he has found refuge on God's thumb. 
• Zero = ward of the state (an individual who has been placed under the care of the government, usually because their parents or guardians are unable to do so).
