  • I get out of bed and put on my clothes.
  • After that, I eat my breakfast.

  • My friends and I cycle to school.
  • My best friend cycles faster than I do.
  • Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius.
  • If your heart stops beating for too long, you die.
  • I come from Canada.
  • She lives in London.
  • He works at a bank.  
  • The bus leaves every 30 minutes.
  • The museum opens at 10.

Present Simple
We use the present simple...
  • when we talk about routine
    I always wake up at six.
    We cycle to school every day.
     My mother works as a doctor. 
     
  • when we talk about facts
    Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius.

  • when we talk about schedules and opening hours
    The bus leaves at 10 o'clock. / School starts at 08:15h.   
Routine is what people often do, like their daily business, including for instance work and where they live.
Facts are things that are always true under normal circumstances, for instance when water boils or freezes.

Affirmative
I work at a bank.
You love chocolate.
We live in a big house.
They teach at a university.
My parents hate loud music.
  

He knows a lot of people.
She goes to school by bike.
It works very well against stains. 
Peter drives a red car.
affirmative = bevestigend (een normale zin)
  • In an affirmative sentence we create the present simple by using just the verb.

  • We add an s or es to the verb when we talk about he, she or it. This is called the shit-rule.

  • Be careful: singular names count as a he or she!

Add es to the verb
If it ends with -o
do > does
go > goes

If it ends with -ss or -sh
kiss > kisses
wish > wishes

if it ends with -ch
catch > catches
match > matches 
change the y to i and add es
If the letter before the y is a consonant
cry > cries
fly > flies
try > tries 

This isn't the case if the letter before the y is a vowel
 play > plays
say > says
obey > obeys 
consonant = medeklinker
vowel = klinker
its own form

It does not work very well against stains. 
Peter does not drive a red car.
negative = ontkennend (vaak een zin met not of never er in)
  • In a negative sentence we form the verb by using do not or does not followed by the infinitive (hele werkwoord).

  • Be careful: do not add an extra s or es to the infinitive!
       
  • We only use does not with he, she and it.

The verb have got follows its own rules

She has not got a big house.
It has not got Bluetooth!
