Development 

Level of development: The level of wealth or poverty in a country.

Developed country (rich) 

Developing country (poor)

Development indictors

= a measurement of wealth and poverty in a country. 

How can you measure wealth or poverty? 

Average income 

Average income gives a good indication of the level of development of a country. 

Example: 

Singapore: 40.000 USD

Cambodia: 1.700 USD

(Singapore is rich, Cambodia is poor)

Purchasing power

Every country has different prices for things. 

For example:
In the Netherlands a liter of milk cost +/-  2 euro's 

In Nigeria a liter of milk cost 0,5 euro's 

The price for products is cheaper in some countries if you compare it to the Netherlands. 
But those people have to work longer to be able to afford something.

Another development indicator

We don't only look at money to decide if a country is or isn't well 

developed. 

We also look at the basic necessities. 

A country can be very rich, but still have bad living conditions or education programs.
