Passive Voice
Have you heard of passive voice in English?

How do we form it?

Passive Form
active form

The chef cooks the meal.

She writes the letter.

They built the house in 1966.
passive form

The meal is cooked (by the chef).

The letter is written.

The house was built in 1966.

Why use the passive voice?
We use passive when:
1. We don't know who did the action. 
  • The window was broken.
2. The person doing the action is not important.
  • This bridge was built in 17th century.
3.  The person doing the action is obvious.
  • Bill was arrested last night. / His mother was operated 2 years ago.

Can you see the emphasis in these sentences?
 
 A) $ 1.000.000 was donated to the children's hospital.

B) The Prime Minister donated $ 1.000.000 to the children's hospital.

How do we form it?
1. use the verb TO BE (in correct tense)
2. add the PAST PARTICIPLE (V3) of the main verb
English is spoken all over the world.
The whole cake was eaten up.
The cake was baked yesterday.
The room is cleaned everyday.
The book was written by a famous writer.
