VE Writing: How to get it right?

What are the checkpoints when writing an email in English?

6 Steps

1. Have you completed the task?
2. Check for M.I.N.T.S.
3. Check your spelling.
4. Check your grammar.
5. Check for politeness.
6. Check your vocabulary.

Step 1

Have you completed the task?

Read the assignment (again).

Cross out all the tasks that you have done.

Step 2

Check for M.I.N.T.S.

Have you used capitals for:

Months and Days

I (also in the middle of a sentence)

Names

Titles

Start of every sentence.

Step 3

Check your spelling.

You can use your dictionaries for this:

> Dutch - English: translate words.

> English - Dutch: check spelling.

Books vs Movies
Are books better than movies?

1. I'd rather read a book than watch a movie.
2. I'd rather watch a movie than read a book.
3. I read the book first and then watch the movie.
4. I watch the movie first and then read the book.

Je kunt hier het verschil tussen THAN en THEN uitleggen.

Than = trappen van vergelijking.

Then = verloop in tijd.

Check your grammar.

Don't forget to check your grammar:

- werkwoorden in de juiste tijd?

- onregelmatige werkwoorden goed?

- she / he / it regel goed toegepast?

- de a / an regel goed toegepast?

- woordvolgorde goed?

- voegwoorden gebruikt?

Step 5

Check for politeness.

In a professional email, it is expected of you to write professional English:

- wees beleefd: "I would like to ...".

- niet gonna, maar "I am going to ...".

- gebruik niet 'I hope I have informed you enough', maar schrijf een echte Engelse afsluiting.

Step 6

Check your vocabulary.

English has loads of synonyms you can use. So use your dictionary to see if you can be more creative than using the same word ten times.

Let op: in het woordenboek staat de juiste vertaling niet altijd als 1e vermeld.
