Conditionals consist of an 
if-clause

The if-clause gives you a condition. A condition is a taken action.

Example:
 If you commit a crime,


and of a main-clause


The main clause states the result of the condition.


Example:
you go to jail.

ZERO CONDITIONAL
  • Used for stating facts and things that are generally true AND
  • when it's likely that the condition will be met
    Example: If you commit a crime, you will go to jail
    - It is a fact/generally true
    - AND it is very likely that this will happen

The zero conditional is in the present tense:

    Example: If I don't feed my cat, it won't be happy
    - It is a situation in the near future
    - AND the situation is real/possible

  • Fictional situations in the past that would have led to a different outcome
  • Example: If I had woken up earlier, I would have been on time.
    - It is a situation in the past, because you already woke up
    - It is a fictional situation, because you didn't wake up on time
    - BUT if you had woken up earlier, you would have been on time

The third conditional is:

If + past perfect                       would/could + have + past participle    
Example:
If I had woken up earlier, I would've been on time.
