Use: Something that happened in the past and is no longer happening.

Signal Words: In 2010, yesterday, last week, one hour ago, this morning.


Regular verbs: Verb + (e)d
Irregular verbs: The word itself changes

Regular verbs (example: TO LAND)
-The astronaut landed on the moon yesterday
-The astronaut didn’t (did not) land on the moon yesterday.
-Did the astronaut land on the moon yesterday?

Irregular verbs (example: TO FIND)
-They found a spaceship last night

- Step 1: Write down two sentences in The Past Simple using the writing prompt (Individually - 2: minutes)
*Don't forget to include a signal word!

- Step 2: Share and discuss your sentences with the person next to you. Explain whether you've used an irregular verb or a regular verb. (In pairs- 1 minute)

- Step 3: We will share some sentences with the class.
(All together- 1 minute)  




Writing prompt:

You are an astronaut and you have just returned from space. Tell me  what you experienced whilst you were there. What did you like. What did you eat? Did you visit a new planet?

Instructions:
Step 1) Setting the scene (5 min)
Each of you will begin your short story with the following sentence: Once upon a time in space… 

Step 2) The action (5 min)
Exchange papers with your partner and continue the action of the story.

Step 3) The end (5 min)
Return the papers and complete the story by writing the ending.

Step 4) Read your story to your partner + Choose one sentence from each story that showcases the Past Simple to share with the class. (3 minutes)
