Introduction
Should make your reader curious about your essay:
  • Use an anecdote
  • Current news article about your topic
  • Ask some critical questions
  •  Give some surprising fact/statistic
  • Make sure to mention why your topic is relevant and give a bit of background information.
  • At the end of the introduction you state your point (your thesis statement)
  • It would be great if you could implement your arguments in your thesis statement: Homework is useful, because students learn better by repeating information.

Exercise:
  •  Step 1: Post your thesis statement in the padlet
  • https://padlet.com/jhuizing1/j57akc9m948t661a
  • Step 2: Give feedback on at least 2 thesis statements (look who has not yet received feedback)
  • Look at the following points: Topic. Statement not a question. Language. Point of view or fact. Arguments.  Be critical, but kind!
  • Step 3: Start writing your introduction: hook, background info, thesis.
  • Use the checklist on Magister!

Slide 13 - Diapositive

Body paragraphs
  •  This is the part in which you will present your arguments
  • In this part you need to convince the reader of your point of view.
  • 3 paragraphs:
  • 2 paragraphs with argument in favour of your thesis statement + evidence/explanation
  • 1 paragraph with argument against your thesis + refutation

Slide 16 - Question ouverte

Tips for writing your body paragraphs
  •  Keep it brief: Only present evidence and explanation for the point you are making.
  • Write a clear topic sentence: The first or the second sentence of a body paragraph is your topic sentence. Every sentence in your paragraph should support your topic sentence.
  • Always refer back to your thesis statement at the end of your paragraph. Answer the question: So what?
  • Use linking words! See the list on magister (studiewijzer-Bronnen)
  • Don't use the same argument/example/evidence twice.

Exercise
  •  For the rest of this class:
  • Work on your introduction and body paragraphs
  • For next week Wednesday I want everyone to hand in their finished introduction and 1 body paragraph on Nestor.
  • Think about topic sentence, linking words and evidence for your arguments.
  • Next week (bufferweek): time to work on credits/essay/reading book
