What are Modal Verbs?

- In Duch they are called 'Hulpwerkwoorden'.

- Modal verbs never stand alone.

- Modal verbs are placed before the main verb (hoofdwerkwoord) to change the meaning of the sentence. That's also why they never stand alone ;).

For example:

I swim every Tuesday. --> Fact 

I can swim every Tuesday. --> Possibility (hypothetical)

Here 'can' is used as a modal verb. 'Swim' is the main verb.

Modal Verbs: When to use Which?

• can: ability (vaardigheid), request (verzoek), permission (toestemming), request (verzoek) 
• have to: commands (commando's), obligation (verplichting), necessity (noodzaak)
• need to: obligation (verplichting), necessity (noodzaak), commands (commando's)
• must: likelihood (waarschijnlijkheid), commands (commando's), obligation (verplichting), necessity (noodzaak)
• may: possibility (mogelijkheid), permission (toestemming)
  
• might: possibility (mogelijkheid)
• should: suggestions/advice (suggesties/advies), likelihood (waarschijnlijkheid)
• could: possibility (mogelijkheid), permission (toestemming), request (verzoek) 
• would/will: request (verzoek)
