Lesson Goal:

At the end of this presentation you can explain and recognise why European countries organised voyages of discovery.

the first voyages of discovery

The European expansion started when Portuguese merchants started trading posts (factorijen) in Africa and Asia. 

They were on a search for a new route to Ithe East Indies for spices and silk. The Silk Route over land was blocked by the Turks.

The expansion of European trade and power over colonies in other parts of the world. 

Spices gave high profits to the merchants
