3. Interested in technology and progress

Surplus of food --> population grew. 

Need for clothes. 
But making them by hand was not fast enough.

 And later the English found a new energy source:
steam power!

Steam machines > coal 
England had a lot of coal.

Low wages, poor housing, cold, overcrowded streets, no toilets or clean water, it stank!

Many people died or got sick.
