Dit onderwerp is herhaling.

Aan het eind van deze les weet je (hopelijk) het verschil tussen must en mustn't en kun je dit toepassen in een Engelse zin.

5.1 Must(n't)

 MUST

Gebruik je als iets moet, het kan niet anders of het is een persoonlijke noodzaak.

 MUSTN'T

Gebruik je als iets NIET moet of NIET mag.

Ordinal numbers

Functie van een rangtelwoord (ordinal)

Een rangtelwoord geeft de rang in bijvoorbeeld een 'lijst' aan.
Hij werd tweede in de race.
He became second in the race.

Rangtelnummers (ordinal numbers)

Een rangtelwoord maak je (bijna !) altijd door er   

-th achter te zetten.

Voorbeeld:

Four  -  Fourth 

Five  -  Fifth 

Six  -   Sixth

 Seven  -  Seventh 

Uitzonderingen:

First - Second - Third (en twenty-first, thirty-second, etc.).

five - fifth 

eight - eighth

nine - ninth

twelve - twelfth

twenty - twentieth
(thirty - thirtieth, forty -  fortieth enz..)

In het kort

1e = first /1st.

2e = second/2nd

3e= third/ 3nd

maar ook tientallen met als tweede cijfer 1, 2 of 3 schrijf je zo.

21 = twenty-first / 21st

in het kort

De andere rangtelwoorden eindigen allemaal op -th.

four > fourth (vierde)

seventeen > seventeenth (zeventiende).

soms verandert de spelling van het rangtelwoord, zodra je hier +th achter zet.

Een aantal voorbeelden van wijzigingen in spelling:

five - fifth
eight - eighth
nine - ninth
twelve - twelfth

In het kort

En denk aan de afgeronde tientallen zoals 20e, 30e en 40e enz.

20e > twentieth (voorheen 20 > twenty).
de 'y' van twenty verandert in 'ie' en dan + th.

30e > thirtieth
40e > fourtieth

Uitspraak 'th'

De 'th' klank is een klank die wij niet in de Nederlandse taal kennen.

Een tip om deze klank uit te spreken:
- zet je tong tegen de onderkant van je voortanden aan laat je tong los terwijl je de 'd' probeert uit te spreken.
