WELCOME BACK 

This lesson

• Discuss the types of questions you get on your test. 
  
• Take a look at the reading reader.
  
• Do assignment 1 together.
  
• In pairs begin with assignment 2. 

Reading reader

• This period you will be working on your reading skills for 1 lesson a week. Towards the end of this period you will do a reading test. The reading reader will help you to be better prepared for the reading test due to the different types of questions we will discuss and the reading assignments you will do.
  

Types of questions

On your exam you will have different types of questions. We will discuss these types of questioning during this lesson.

Types of questions:

- Multiple choice questions

- Open questions

- True/False questions

- Quote (citaat) questions

- Gap texts (gaten tekst)

Multiple choice

• Read the question carefully and underline the important words.
  
• Do the same with the answers, underline the most important words. 
  
• Eliminate the incorrect options -> Read each of the options and eliminate the ones that are wrong. They may not be related to the question or may be completely off.
  

 

Open questions

• Carefully read the question and watch out for the words in bold. 
  

True/False questions

• Read the statements carefully and underline the important words. 
  
• Example: the statement “the sky is blue” is correct, but the statement “the sky is always blue” is not necessarily right because there are days that it’ s cloudy or when it’s dark -> nighttime sky.
  
• Dissect the statement, is every part of the sentence true? 
  

       This is because, if any part of the statement is false, then the entire thing has to be false.

• Example of this would be: “spaghetti sauce contains tomatoes and is blue.” While it is true that spaghetti sauce does contain tomatoes, the sauce is red. Therefore, this statement is false even though the first section (spaghetti sauce contains tomatoes) is true. 
  
• When all else fails, guess.
  

Quote (citaat) questions

• Copy a sentence, a part of a sentence or a word from the text. 
  
• Check if you have written it down correctly   
  

Gap text (gaten tekst)

• Gap text: fill in a word or part of a sentence that is missing.
• First read the text carefully, especially the sentence before and after the gap. 
  
• Try and use each word in the sentence, which one fits best?
