Her death was marked by several memorial services, among them lying in state at the Capitol  in Washington, D.C., where an estimated 50,000 people viewed her casket.

  • Born on January 15, 1929
  • He was a minister at a church in Atlanta, Georgia
  • He fought for the rights of black people in the USA
  • He was assassinated on April 4, 1968

  • King strived for: equality, human rights for African Americans, the economically disadvantage and all victims of injustice through peaceful protest

  •  Strong belief in nonviolent protest set the tone of the movement

  •  Boycotts, protests, and marches -> law-making against racial discrimination

King's accomplishments are numerous. They include:
  • Providing leadership in the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955 
  • Established the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in 1957
  • Delivering his famous "I Have a Dream" speech in 1963
  • King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 and is remembered each year on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a U.S. federal holiday since 1986.
