Henny's Children's Home

Each year volunteers visit Henny's Children's Home in Kenya (an African country). In this lesson we're going to write a letter to children who are your age. In this lessonup we are going to learn more about the Children's Home (weeshuis) and we're going to learn why they have to stay in this orphanage. Also, we'll be writing a letter in which we give information about ourselves and we will ask for information about their lives. 

Albinism

Some of the children can't stay at their parent's place because they have a condition (aandoening) called 'albinism'. This is a condition that causes the skin to become completely white. Their parents think they are possessed by evil spirits and that's why they are orphaned (the parents don't want them any more); Luckily, the volunteers of Henny's Children's Home take care of the children that would otherwise end up on the streets.

Dear student,

I'm writing this letter as part of my English assignment. In it, I'll introduce myself and share some information about my life and where I live. I'll also ask about your name, hobbies, and what it's like living in Kenya. I hope you enjoy reading my letter.

My name is ______________, and I live in Kampen, a small city in The Netherlands. I am 14 years old and attend Ichthus College, a medium-sized school. I am currently in year 3, which is a pre-exam year.  I live together with my parents in a house with a big garden, and I share it with my two twin brothers, who are 10 years old. They both play tennis. In my free time, I enjoy playing video games and playing hockey. My favorite video game is FIFA. I would love to work for a professional football club when I'm older. After I pass my exams, I plan to study "Sports and Movements" at vocational college, where I’ll learn how to organize sports events. I hope to organize a big football tournament one day. At school, PE and biology are my favourite subjects. In PE I learn about new sports and I like that a lot. My favourite food is lasagna which is an Italian dish. When I'm not playing football, I enjoy meeting up with friends or watching a film at a friend's place.

I also have some questions for you. I hope you'll be happy to answer them. We have a very moderate climate in The Netherlands. It doesn't get too hot in Summer and it doesn't get too cold in winter. The big downside is that it rains a lot though. Do you like the weather where you live? Also, do you have any hobbies as well? I told you I like playing sports and games. Do you enjoy doing that too or do you have any other hobbies? What is your favourite food? Do they have Italian food in your country as well? The last question would be: what would you like to do as a job in the future?
