Linking words

We use linking words 
to join  sentences / ideas together 
when we're talking or writing.

For example, combine these sentences with linking words:
I wanted to go to the party. I was feeling sick.
She loves running. She’s not very fast.
I forgot my homework. The teacher was angry.
He stayed at home. It was raining.
She was studying. Her brother was watching TV.

Why do you think learning to debate controversial topics is important?

Often in life you will come across situations where it's important to be able to discuss difficult topics in a well spoken and measured manner. This can be difficult sometimes since emotions often come in to play. It's also important to have the vocabulary (woordenschat) to be able to successfully have these conversations.
Furthermore, discussing controversial topics helps you to learn to live and work together peacefully and respectfully with people with different backgrounds and lifestyles
You also work on your critical thinking skills

Now you speak!
  • Take the topic you feel strongly about.
  • For at least 1 minute, you will argue your opinion to your partner.
  • Use fillers, and linking words (because, therefore, since, as, like etc.).
  • Your partner can ask for clarification
  • Use full sentences.
  • After 1 minute: your partner will reply whether he/she agrees and why.

  • Done? Switch roles and repeat.
