  • had better / would rather / should
  • -ing vorm
  • used to + hele werkwoord (vroeger)

You need this information for the exercises in the workbook

  • had better + hele werkwoord = 'kon maar beter'
You'd better not lie to your close friends.
  • would rather + hele werkwoord = 'zou liever'
She would rather not talk about it, if you don't mind.
  • should + hele werkwoord = 'zou (eigenlijk) moeten'
You don't have to tell me what I should do, I already know.

Grammar: -ing vorm
  • After certain verbs you use the -ing vorm of a verb. (Na bepaalde werkwoorden gebruik je de -ing vorm).
  • You do this after the verbs: love, like, hate, stop, start, begin:
He loves playing videogames. / I hate flying
  • You can also use the -ing vorm at the start of a sentence:
Cycling to school is not my favourite thing to do. / Running a marathon cannot be easy.

  • If you want to talk about something that regularly happened in the past (iets wat vroeger altijd gebeurde), you use:
  • used to + hele werkwoord
- We used to visit my grandparents every weekend, but they moved to Australia.
- She used to listen to One Direction when she was young.
- I used to hate broccoli, but I kind of like it now.

  • Read the blue grammar box before you start with the grammar exercises (exercises 12, 14, and 16). Most of the grammar is repetition from last year.
