To emphasise the action or the person/thing having something done to them
  • The Mona Lisa was painted by Leonardo Da Vinci

When it is unknown/unimportant who did something
  • The pictures were stolen from the museum (by a thief)
  • The road is being repaired (by road workers)

 When you want to sound more professional / more formal

How to form the passive

A passive always uses at least a form of 'to be' + past participle 


Example:
The apples are grown in Spain
All calls were put through to Portugal
