• Countries battled to have the best industry. A stronger industry meant a stronger country.
• They also wanted to be the best in making technological advancements.
• This economic rivalry even caused the British government to try and ban products made in Germany.

Colonies

• Great Britain and France: In the 18th century               ownership of important colonies in America and Asia.

• Around 1850: their sights are set on Africa. 

Why colonies?

• They needed resources for the industrialisation (rubber and cotton).
•  They could sell products to the people in the colonies (consumer market).
• Good for a country's reputation. (Nationalism!)

Modern Imperialism

• Colonising African and Asian countries during the second half of the 19th century.
• Europeans are now also targeting the interior of Africa.
• European countries want to conquer and control as much territory as possible.

Berlin Conference

• The Berlin Conference (1884-1885) was held to make sure no conflicts or worse wars would arise between the countries trying to capture Africa. 
• Africa was divided without regard  for the interests of the African people. 

Wilhelm II

• After the unification of Germany in 1871 it got involved with the 'Arms race for Africa'.
• In 1888 Wilhem II ascended the throne. 
• He enhanced the nationalism, militarism and modern imperialism with his idea of Weltpolitik. 

Allies

• Wilhelm II knew France and England would get in the way of his Weltpolitik and the role he wished to play in Europe. 
• He allied himself with Austria-Hungary and later with the Ottoman Empire.
• In return GB allied herself with France and Russia.
