If means: 'als' or 'indien' 

You use it when you are not sure if it is going to happen

OR

to talk about a condition (voorwaarde)

If I win the lottery I  will  buy a new car. (voorwaarde)

If you're not too late, you could still make it.  (onzeker)

WHEN (page 107)

When means: 'toen' or 'wanneer'

You use it: 

When you know for certain something is going to happen.

I'll call you when the airplane has landed.

When I get home, I will clean my room.

'If' sentences  (conditionals - voorwaardelijke bijzin) - 4 kinds -

• 0: facts - If water reaches 100 degrees, it boils.
• 1: real or likely situations - If you leave now, you'll be in time.
• 2: unlikely or hypothetical situations - If I won the lottery, I would go travelling around the world.
• 3: situations that cannot be changed - If I had studied for the test, I would have passed. (But I didn't study, so I didn't pass.)

It works nearly the same as in Dutch, so it should be easy if you can do it in Dutch.

Difference with Dutch

In de bijzin GEEN will/would, in de hoofdzin wèl.

Deze vier zinnen kunnen maar op een manier in het Engels:

Als ik geld had, kocht ik een nieuwe smartphone.

Als ik geld zou hebben, kocht ik een nieuwe smartphone.

Als ik geld had, zou ik een nieuwe smartphone kopen.

Hoe dan?

Vertaal: Als ik geld had, kocht ik een nieuwe smartphone.
