In 1776, during the Revolutionary War, delegates met in Philadelphia, agreed to separate from Great Britian, and drafted and signed the Declaration of Independence.
To govern the new country, the leaders of the US first created the Articles of Confederations, but it was flawed.
Delegates met in 1787 to revise the articles, but ended up with the Constitution instead.
