To your first English lesson:

This lesson is about:

- Why do we need to learn English?
- What do you need to learn English?

- What will the lessons be like?

Before we start ...

it is important to know that 

it is easier to understand 

the English you read or hear

than to speak or write in English yourself.

That is completely normal! Do not worry!

In most countries English is a compulsary subject in  secondary  schools. 

So, for how many years have you had English classes at school?

For how many years ...?

How do you feel about English?

2. It's hard

What is your  best  skill?

LISTENING:    I understand the English I hear.

READING:       I understand the English I read. 

CONVERSATION:    I can have a conversation in English. 

SPEAKING:     I can give a presentation in English. 

WRITING:        I can write a text in English.

Example

There is a foreign student in our schoolbuilding.

The student asks you:

What is the easiest way to get to the city centre?

That was not an easy question to answer. Because, it depends on how difficult the task is, it depends on the level of difficulty.

With the bus. 

student B's answer

The easiest way is to go there by bus. If you walk out of this building you will see a bus stop on this side of the road, a little bit to your right. There you should take line ... which will take you to the Grote Markt. That's the city centre.

It is easy to see that student B shows a higher level of English than student A. 

How would you grade answer A and B on a scale of 1 - 10?

Next week we will do a level test to determine your level:
You can follow English on two levels this year:
A1 - A2, or A2 - B1

You can always change course during the year.

Let's get back to the 1st question.

I asked Google this question and I had 2.000.000.000 hits/answers. So which one should I choose? The one at the top? The shortest, the easiest? Only one video?

Compare  your own answers to what the students in the next videos are saying. 

Listen to what these students from Italy are saying. 

Do not worry if you do not understand everything. 

Try to get the main points.

That goes for all the videos.

Did the students say something that was not on your list?

Do you have something on your list the students did not say?

Now, back to our 2nd question.

What   do   you   need    to learn    English ?

Now, that is a very difficult question. 

Make a list for yourself.

Assignment

In the next video Mr Ducnan will first tell you something about Why we need to learn English. 

Then he will give you a few tips for learning English. 

Write down Mr Duncan's tips and compare them to your own list.
