Table Mountain

Table Mountain is more than 3 kilometres wide. There is often a layer of clouds on top of it, which people call the ‘Table Cloth’ (tafelkleed). Table Mountain is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the country. Lots of people also get married there.

Cape Town

Cape Town was founded (opgericht) by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in 1652. A Dutchman called Jan van Riebeeck created the first European settlement (nederzetting) there. Most people in Cape Town speak Afrikaans. This language comes from Dutch. Cape Town is famous as the place of the first human heart transplant (harttransplantatie).

Tswaing Meteorite Crater

Today there is a shallow (ondiep) salty lake in the Tswaing Meteorite Crater. Stone tools found nearby the crater show that it was visited by people 100,000 years ago. They probably came there to hunt and collect salt.

Drakensberg

The Drakensberg is more than 1,000 kilometers long. It is one of the best places for hiking in South Africa. The name 'Drakensberg' comes from the Dutch word Drakensbergen or 'dragon moutains'. No one knows why it is called this, but it's probably because the mountain tops look like dragons.
